On March 23-25, 2016, SASI organised a preparatory meeting in Kimberley with 28 San representatives and leading researchers from South Africa. The workshop addressed examples of past ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cases of research studies focusing on San people and San heritage. Main ethical issues of these case studies were highlighted, and changes to the way the research community should approach the San people were proposed. Prof. Himla Soodyal, a principal investigator on the Genographic Project, was one of the invited speakers, and gave a speech about ethical issues and community engagement in genetic research.
