Dr. Urmila Thatte is Professor and Head at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai. She has an M.D. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Mumbai, a Diplomate of the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, in Clinical Pharmacology and is a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Dr. Thatte serves on the National Pharmacovigilance Advisory Committee and is the Coordinator of the Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre of the National Pharmacovigilance Programme. Dr. Thatte is on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Drug Evaluation, Member, Task Force of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, Member, and Steering Committee, Drugs from Ocean, Dept. of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India. She also serves on various Scientific Review committees as a Clinical Pharmacology expert of the Indian Council of Medical Research.

In the field of Research Bioethics, Dr. Thatte serves on the Ethics Committees of the Tata Memorial Hospital and KEM Hospital as well as on the Independent Ethics Committee, Mumbai and Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. At the national level, Dr. Thatte is also on the NACO (National AIDS Control Organisation) Ethics Committee.

Dr. Thatte is the Secretary of the Forum for Ethics Review Committees in India. She has been the Course Director for Research Ethics in the Joint NIH-ICMR Training Program on Bioethics and has served as faculty on several national programs.

Dr. Thatte has completed a project on developing training modules on GCP and Advanced GCP as well as National DSMB Guidelines for the DCGI and WHO and conducted nation wide course on GCP for investigators, ethics Committee members, sponsors and Regulators. Dr. Thatte has lead the Indian Society for Clinical Research-ICMR effort to make guidelines on Compensation for Research Related Injury.

Dr. Thatte was conferred the “Excellence in Drug Research Award” (Traditional Medicine) by the Central Drug Research Institute, the prestigious Dr. BN Ghosh Oration of the Indian Pharmacological Society on the topic “Herbal Drug Development – Opportunities and Challenges” and the Dr. Faroque Abdullah Oration of SMS Medical College, Jaipur on “Ethical Issues in Clinical Research”. She has over 120 Publications in National and International Journals including 8 books to her credit and was the Clinical Pharmacology Section Editor for Clinical Pharmacology for the API (Association of Physicians of India) Textbook of Medicine published in 2008.
