Dr Roger Chennells works as legal advisor for SASI and is senior partner of the human rights law practice Chennells Albertyn (Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa) since 1980. Specialized in labour, land, environmental and human rights law, he has over the years developed an interest in indigenous peoples as well as intellectual property aspects of heritage, working with the San peoples for many years as legal advisor. He has worked for the aborigines in Australia, and has assisted the San people in land claims as well as benefit sharing. Roger’s PhD was funded by the Wellcome TRUST, and his thesis title is Equitable Access to Human Genetic Resources: Balancing Benefit Sharing and Undue Inducement (Springer, 2016).
